Hey there, friends!
Today I’m sharing something super exciting: a cake that uses a whole orange yes, peel and all! This Whole Orange Cake is one of my absolute favorite things to make. And guess what? I’m not a professional baker… not even close. But this cake turned out so good, and I just had to share it with you.

With just 7 simple ingredients and some love, you’ll have a cake that smells amazing, tastes fresh, and looks like you spent hours in the kitchen even if you didn’t. Trust me, if I can make it, you can too!

Method (In Detail):

Boil the Orange First

This is a super important step that makes all the difference! Take your whole orange yes, with the peel and place it in a saucepan filled with water. Let it boil gently for around 40 minutes. Boiling helps to soften the peel and removes the bitterness that can sometimes come from the white pith. Once boiled, drain the water and let the orange cool completely before using it in your batter. This step adds an amazing natural fragrance and deep orange flavor to your cake. Skipping it might leave you with a bitter aftertaste, so don’t rush this part!

Mix Eggs & Sugar

While your orange is cooling, it’s the perfect time to start your batter. In a large mixing bowl, crack in the 3 eggs and add the 100g of sugar. Use an electric mixer (or a strong whisk and some arm power) to beat them together until the mixture becomes pale, fluffy, and almost doubles in volume. This step introduces air into the batter, which helps make your cake light and soft once baked.

Add Dry Ingredients

Once your eggs and sugar are nice and fluffy, it’s time to bring in the dry ingredients. Add 275g of all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon of baking powder to the bowl. Stir gently, folding the flour into the wet mixture. Don’t overmix here just blend enough so there are no visible lumps or dry patches. Overmixing can lead to a dense cake, and we want it tender and airy.

Add Yogurt and Orange

Next, stir in 120g of plain yogurt to the batter. The yogurt keeps the cake moist and adds a subtle tang that complements the citrus flavor beautifully. Now, take your boiled and cooled orange, chop it into a few pieces (to make blending easier), and place it into a food processor or blender. Blend until it becomes a smooth, fragrant puree make sure the peel is well-blended too. Add this orange puree directly into your batter and gently fold it in until the mixture is evenly combined. At this stage, the batter should smell incredible!

Bake It Up

Now that your batter is ready, it’s time to bake. First, grease your cake tin well with butter or non-stick spray to ensure easy removal later. Pour the batter into the tin and smooth out the top with a spatula. Place it into a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F). Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, but remember every oven is a little different. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean or with a few crumbs, your cake is ready! If not, give it a few more minutes and test again.

Let the cake cool in the tin for about 10 minutes before removing it to a wire rack. Once it’s fully cooled, you can slice it up and enjoy a piece of citrusy goodness!

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs

  • 275g all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • 120g plain yogurt

  • 50g butter

  • 100g sugar

  • 1 whole orange (boiled beforehand)

Directions

  • Boil the Orange First! Place your orange in a saucepan and boil it for about 40 minutes. This removes the bitter taste from the peel and makes the orange super fragrant and soft. Let it cool before blending!
  • Mix Eggs & Sugar In a big bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together using a mixer. It should turn light and fluffy. This step helps give your cake that soft texture we all love.
  • Add Dry Ingredients Add the flour and baking powder into the mixture. Mix gently until it’s all blended in.
  • Add Yogurt and Orange Stir in the yogurt. Now, puree the whole boiled orange (yep, peel and all!) in a food processor until it’s smooth. Add this orange magic into your cake batter and stir until everything is mixed well.
  • Bake It Up Pour your batter into a greased cake tin. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 50–60 minutes. Use a toothpick to test if it comes out clean, your cake is done!

Notes

  • Don’t skip boiling the orange. The peel can make your cake taste bitter if used raw.
  • Let the orange cool before blending. A hot orange could cook your batter early or mess with your blender!
  • Don’t overmix after adding flour. Too much mixing can make the cake dense instead of fluffy.
  • Grease your cake tin well so the cake comes out easily and doesn’t break.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or Greek yogurt.
  • Dust with powdered sugar for a simple finish.
  • Pair with hot tea or orange juice for a refreshing combo.
  • Add some orange zest on top for an extra zing!

Fun Fact:

Did you know boiling the orange not only removes bitterness but also brings out natural sweetness in the peel? It’s a trick that goes way back in Mediterranean cooking!

Conclusion:

This Whole Orange Cake is perfect if you want something simple, unique, and super flavorful. It’s citrusy, moist, and made with ingredients you probably already have at home. Plus, it’s a fun way to use a whole orange and try something different. I hope you give it a try and feel proud when you take that first bite.
